Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General reacted to Biden’s statement and spoke to reporters that the world body is worried about the possibility of escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
“We are very worried about the exchange of fire and chain developments that we have seen in the region, including in Syria, Jordan and Iraq”, IRNA reporter's report from the United Nations quoted him saying.
The UN spokesperson stated that all these incidents risk the spread of conflict, which he said “is the last thing the world body wants”
Facing growing pressure in an election year, Biden was asked if he has made a decision on how he will respond to the attack that killed three American forces and injured 40 others.
“Yes”, he said while leaving the White House for an election fundraising campaign in Florida. But he declined to provide further details.
The US President at the same time said however that Washington is not looking for a "wider war in the Middle East," explaining, "that's not what I'm looking for."
Biden wouldn't go as far as saying Iran is directly responsible for the base attack, but blamed it on resistance groups he claimed being backed by Iran, an accusation the Islamic Republic has categorically rejected as baseless.
Iranian officials, including the country’s permanent mission at the United Nations issued several statements, denying the country’s involvement in the US base attack and rejecting any escalation after the US media and the Pentagon came up with anti-Iran rhetoric, falling short of mentioning America’s own destructive policies in the Middle East.
Iran’s UN mission clarified that resistance forces whether in Iraq, Syria or elsewhere are not under Iran’s control, directly or indirectly, and Tehran is not responsible for their actions in the region.
Regional resistance groups have carried out dozens of attacks on US military bases and facilities in recent months amid growing anti-American sentiment over Washington's support for the Israeli regime's crimes and genocide in the Gaza Strip.
